Gt gt Grandfather William Tranter aged 19 (b.1849), and of Wilson Cottages, Hammersmith, married Maria Jane Potter also aged 19, (b.1849), of 7 Wellington Road, Hammersmith at St Peters Church Hammersmith 30th November 1868. Maria Jane was generally known as Jane.
The marriage certificate shows that Maria Jane’s father was John Potter, a Groom.
Having followed the Tranter line back to Stokenchurch Oxfordshire, it was now time to see if the Potters were a London family, or had moved in from elsewhere to try and improve their lives.
In 1871 William and Jane were living at 6 Wellington Road, and next door at number 7, were John and Maria Potter. Both John and Maria, were said to have been born at Colney Hertfordshire. John aged 49 (birth c1822), and Maria 48 (birth 1823), with children George 15, Ann 12, and Emily 9.
In 1861, John and Maria were living at 3, Little Ebenezer Place, and their family had grown to Matilda 17, John 12, Jane 8, George 5, and Ann 2. Also in the house were lodgers, David 20 and George 18,Taylor
In 1851, John and Maria Potter were living at Higgs Stable, St Mary’s North End, Fulham, with children Matilda aged 7 and born at South Mimms and John aged 3 born in Fulham. Therefore they must have moved to Fulham between 1846 and 1848. Living next door were Charles (17), George (19) and William Squires (20) all born at South Mimms.
On July 1842, at South Mimms Middlesex, John Potter a Groom, married Maria Squires both of full age, and living at South Mimms. John’s father was William Potter and Maria’s father was Joseph Squires, both Labourers.
In 1841, William Potter aged 55 was living at North Mimms with Abigail Potter aged 65 and Joshua Potter 20.
