I have a distinct recollection of being in bed (aged 4) one morning and still half asleep. It was a lovely day, blue sky and sunny.

My mother bounced into my bedroom full of life and announced that we had dropped an atomic bomb on Japan. At my age, I really had no idea what she was on about, but she was so excited, it must be important.
I think she took a while to explain what was happening, but she must have realised that war in the Far East was fast coming to an end.
The second bomb was dropped a few days later and that decided the outcome. More important and exciting for me was that it was my 5th birthday in six days time!
