<p>I have a distinct recollection of being in bed (aged 4) one morning and still half asleep. It was a lovely day, blue sky and sunny. </p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-full"><img data-recalc-dims="1" fetchpriority="high" decoding="async" width="525" height="515" src="https://i0.wp.com/myfamilyrootsandshoots.uk/wp-content/uploads/2025/08/David46-1.jpg?resize=525%2C515&#038;ssl=1" alt="" class="wp-image-16731" srcset="https://i0.wp.com/myfamilyrootsandshoots.uk/wp-content/uploads/2025/08/David46-1.jpg?w=525&amp;ssl=1 525w, https://i0.wp.com/myfamilyrootsandshoots.uk/wp-content/uploads/2025/08/David46-1.jpg?resize=300%2C294&amp;ssl=1 300w" sizes="(max-width: 525px) 100vw, 525px" /></figure>

<p>My mother bounced into my bedroom full of life and announced that we had dropped an atomic bomb on Japan. At my age, I really had no idea what she was on about, but she was so excited, it must be important. </p>

<p>I think she took a while to explain what was happening, but she must have realised that war in the Far East was fast coming to an end. </p>

<p>The second bomb was dropped a few days later and that decided the outcome. More important and exciting for me was that it was my 5th birthday in six days time!</p>
